Yeah, I do agree with a lot of this stuff. My mom tried to keep Barbie & Disney princess stuff (failed, thanks to my aunt) out of my life when I was younger bc she’s always been a little overprotective and also ascribing to a slightly strange brand of 2nd wave feminism, but yeah. Barbie does a lot of stuff right and a lot of stuff wrong (did u see the “international barbies” they put out that are basically just racist stereotypes? mattel. mattel stop.) Anyway, all her careers are really good and it’s nice that there’s a lot of diversity there, but looking at her jobs? Like, there’s waitress and stewardess and veterinarian and astronaut, but there’s also some weird ones gone (she’s been 5 types of doctor but never a lawyer??? also, mcdonalds’s employee????). Anyway, when I was younger, I had mom!barbie, rapunzel!barbie, vet!barbie, WNBA!barbie, some unaffiliated ones, and college student ken, and I always ended up taking ken’s backpack and books and giving them to one of the random barbie’s and, like, leaving ken in a corner somewhere.
So, yeah, the focus on females in media for young girls is nice, because thinking about all the stuff i’d feel comfortable showing my kids - a lot of it is obviously less problematic than barbie, but the thing about barbie is that the narratives are about the girls and their friendships with each other and the male romantic interests are like a sidenote.
and i love that the litd stuff is so self-aware and jokey about the history of barbie. i love how self-possessed barbie is; it’s good that there’s some minority representation on the show; i love that both the boys on the show are shown as less competent than barbie. i love that when there’s a competition to see who’s barbie’s best friend, barbie shows up and shuts it down because she likes everyone best. i love that barbie is intentionally kind to the girl who likes her boyfriend, even if that girl is constantly trying to undermine her, and i love that barbie SHUTS RYAN DOWN politely but firmly every time he makes unwanted romantic things.
and yet the fandom just ships ken and ryan and, like, i actually see where they’re coming from. there is legitimate tension there. BUT this contributes to a lot of erasure of the main themes of the show! i see a lot of stuff going around about the 2001 references and how “kyan are meant to be” but i have never seen anything about the positivity of female friendships or the fair-to-middling representation issues on the show or, really, any feminist critiques at ALL. and i don’t want to be the ONLY person talking about stuff like this in the tag!
but now that i’m thinking about your ideas and stuff, i think i’m going to have to, because i have a lot of emotions about barbie apparently HUH WHO KNEW

To everyone who would like to participate in the fandom theme song singing thing (name copyright pending), I’ve decided we should start getting organised. Please record a video of yourself lipsyncing (or singing) to the full LITD theme song.

The quality of the video doesn’t matter, but better quality is obviously preferred. If possible, be interesting: dance, have Barbie’s in the video with you, where a cool outfit, work schlond poofa in wherever possible (??? I am uncreative, so I probably won’t be doing anything interesting). You don’t have to edit the file in any way, or even have good quality audio.

All you have to do is send the file to plasticsixpack@yahoo.com.au. If the file is too big to attach I reccomend transferbigfiles. If you’d prefer, you can upload the video to youtube and then send me the link. I’ll wait a few weeks before I start editing the video and hopefully I’ll actually have some videos to work with by them.

I am very excited! Lyrics are below the cut.
